The Staff Accountant / Senior Accountant is responsible for performing the typical month end and year end accounting activities as well as reviewing the company’s financial records for accuracy and compliance. This position also acts as a deputy for the Accounting Manager. Being part of a small team, this position may also need to perform some bookkeeping tasks as backup during other team member’s personal time off.
This position will be located in Houston, TX and will report to the Accounting Manager.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
ACCOUNTING
Perform monthly account reconciliations
Verify commission eligibility and proper commission payments to Sales Partners
Calculate and record accruals and deferrals for revenue and expense recognition per GAAP standards
Review Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable entries for accuracy
Monitor company’s expenses and make recommendations for cost savings
Make process improvement recommendations and set up guidelines for employees to follow (regarding AP/AR and expense reports).
Act as a backup during other team member’s Personal Time Off
TAX COMPLIANCE
Prepare monthly sales tax filings
Ensure state compliance together with external state tax consultant.
File sales tax amendments to recuperate sales tax credits
Provide sales tax consulting related to exemptions and tax rates to Order Handling team
Assist in Preparation of Property Tax Schedules
AUDIT COMPLIANCE
Prepare year-end statements, including fixed asset tables.
Provide answers to PBC (provided by client) for external annual auditors
Work with Accounting Manager in preparing year-end statement and accrual reporting to CPA tax firm.
CASH MANAGEMENT
Perform daily company cash management.
Execute funds movement transactions.
Report cash operation activities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
In-depth understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
Understanding of United States Business Tax system required
Sales Tax (reporting experience preferred but not required)
Federal and State Income Tax
Property tax
Exceptional Knowledge of Accounting software systems (QuickBooks Pro a plus)
Exceptional Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
Strong knowledge of other Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)
Canada tax and reporting experience preferred but not required
Excellent communication skills
Reliable work style with self-initiative

Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
At least 5 years experience in areas mentioned in essential job functions above
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited school or university in Accounting, Finance or related is required; or several Accounting and tax courses successfully taken are required.
